A Vision Ignited by Reality
Dr. Bernard Olayo, a Kenyan physician and social entrepreneur, is driven by a simple but powerful belief: strong health systems save lives. His journey began in the rural district hospitals of Kenya, where he witnessed the heartbreaking reality of patients dying due to the lack of basic medical essentials, including medical oxygen.
These profound experiences ignited a passion to transform the delivery of primary care in Eastern Africa. He saw firsthand that systemic failures, not a lack of commitment, were costing lives, and he knew something had to change
The Birth of CPHD
In 2008, Dr. Olayo founded the Center for Public Health and Development (CPHD), a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening health systems through innovative, community-driven solutions. CPHD’s work is the tangible realization of his vision to build sustainable, resilient healthcare infrastructure.
Dr. Olayo’s visionary work has garnered international acclaim, including recognition as an Aspen New Voices Fellow and a Bill Gates Hero in the Field. While these honors are significant, his greatest achievement remains the lives saved and the communities empowered through improved access to quality healthcare.
Today, CPHD continues to lead initiatives that bridge critical healthcare gaps, ensuring that no mother, child, or patient is left behind due to systemic shortcomings
